{"id":91,"date":"2021-12-17T18:35:37","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T18:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/?page_id=91"},"modified":"2024-05-19T16:43:21","modified_gmt":"2024-05-19T14:43:21","slug":"bending-and-tempering","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/index.php\/bending-and-tempering\/","title":{"rendered":"Bending and Tempering"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid layout5-row cropParent padding-off \">\n<div class=\"sections-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"span12 \">\n<div class=\"section article \">\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<h5>Product Manager for Bending and Tempering Equipment Tamglass Engineering Oy (now GLASTON Oyj)<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image_2021-12-23_183217.png\" width=\"494\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In the end of 1980&#8217;ies and in 1990&#8217;ies GLASTON Oyj made very profitable business with HTF flat tempering furnaces and ESU windscreen bending furnaces.\u00a0 It had a new, even higher margin product, HTBS,\u00a0 for door glasses of cars.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The product development team failed to develop a car rear glasses machine. It is much more difficult process than HTBS.\u00a0 I invented in 1990 a simple system, later called <strong>BTF,<\/strong> (Bending and Tempering Furnace). The development team did not want BTF. The management did not understand the technology.\u00a0 Development team proposed <strong>CBTS.<\/strong> In my opinion a bad process. This created a dispute. Further, I gave important advices to the top management of arrogance.\u00a0 I was fired in 1992 although I was very correct for both!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I sued GLASTON to court for illegal, dirty and untrue dismissal. We solved the dispute in such a way that GLASTON agreed to give me the BTF patent rights, paid patent fees for some years and paid a small reimbursement. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">BTF would have been extremely profitable 1990&#8217;ies!\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid layout5-row cropParent margins-topbottom padding-all \">\n<div class=\"sections-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"span12 \">\n<div class=\"outer-margin-on first last\">\n<div class=\"section article margins-on\">\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<h5>WHAT HAPPENED TO BTF?<\/h5>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">GRUPPO FININD had a small glass machinery business called IANUA.\u00a0 GRUPPO FININD is now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isoclimagroup.com\/en\/\">https:\/\/www.isoclimagroup.com\/en\/<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0I contacted IANUA. Mr. Alberto Bertolini, technical and commercial &#8221;brains&#8221; of ISOCLIMA.\u00a0 He understood the potential of BTF immediately.\u00a0 I got quickly an order of customer who understood the process correctly.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">After this it was designed and manufactured. The glasses were impressive in 1990&#8217;ies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h5>BTF and its glasses<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Bend-2.jpg\" width=\"483\" height=\"358\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">BTF photo in IANUA workshop just after the first glasses were made in 1995.\u00a0 The glass held by employees was Toyota Cressida rear glass.\u00a0 Bending depth 127 mm, cross curvature 4 mm, thickness 3,8 mm. Chief designer of BTF, ex Tamglass\/GLASTON engineer is standing on left.\u00a0 Later he designed CONVAIR, flat tempering furnace.\u00a0 Next to him\u00a0 BTF inventor, Risto Nikander.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; padding-left: 40px;\">Several glasses were tested as per video from 1995 in IANUA workshop.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2cIsqubeJn0\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2cIsqubeJn0<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; padding-left: 40px;\">Soon\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">PININFARINA<\/span>, a famous car designer in 1990&#8217;ies, bought <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">p<span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">rototype<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0glasses<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> made by <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">BTF prototype.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>FERRARI door glas<\/strong><strong>ses\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Ferrari.jpg\" width=\"664\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row-fluid layout5-row cropParent margins-topbottom padding-all \">\n<div class=\"sections-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"span12 \">\n<div class=\"outer-margin-on first last\">\n<div class=\"section article margins-on\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Many Ferrari owners wanted to change new \u201cSTOP SOL\u201d glasses to their cars.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The production took place in IANUA workshop by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">protype BTF.\u00a0<\/span> Door glass radius was 890 mm, cross curvature 4 mm.\u00a0 \u00a0Soon glass sales were a small but profitable business to IANUA. IANUA did not deliver the prototype BTF to the customer but BTF was installed it to ISOCLIMA factory.\u00a0 IANUA made a new one for the customer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">BTF is producing excellent boat glasses in Canada and airplane glasses in USA. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">GLASTON made\u00a0 BTF 25 years later<\/span> as per link <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/glaston.net\/releases\/?id=55D9E431486F20E8\">https:\/\/glaston.net\/releases\/?id=55D9E431486F20E8<\/a>, <\/span>Risto Nikander tried to pressurize GLASTON to make BTF by complex, reverse curvature glasses by patent FI 88909, while still working in Tamglass\/(GLASTON).\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>BTF prototype; even more impressive glasses<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/5-SIKORSKY.jpg\" width=\"346\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SIKORSKY helicopter <\/span>windscreen were manufactured in Los Angeles.\u00a0 Bending and heat strengthening was made in Japan, ASAHI, now ASG by vertical bending and tempering machine.<\/li>\n<li>When BTF was in ISOCLIMA factory preprocessed glasses were air freighted from the USA.\u00a0 One engineer and an inspector came to check the bending and heat strengthening quality.\u00a0 The glasses were air freighted back to USA for lamination and encapsulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Other inventions related to BTF<\/h5>\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #ff0000;\">As BTF was a low capacity machine for short series, these invention were very important for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0Adjustable blowing area; saves energy + lowers tempering peak power.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A shape adjustable quench head; saves tooling costs. (A better now available).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A collar change system; for quick change over from product to product.\u00a0 See videos of BTF or ShapeWizard.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Why BTF sales were stopped?<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>IANUA tried to make &#8221;double chamber&#8221; machines to increase the capacity.\u00a0 It failed to transfer the glass from preheating chamber to bending and final heating chamber.<\/li>\n<li>First CONAVAIR was made in 1996.\u00a0 It was super by capacity ja excellent for the process. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was perfect convection heating chamber, especially for low emissivity glasses which were coming in 1990&#8217;ies.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ISOCLIMA management understood that this could create a <strong>huge<\/strong> business business!<\/span>\u00a0 See <em>&#8221;Competition&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8221;Flat Glass Tempering&#8221;.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<h5>High capacity &#8221;BTF&#8221;<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Bending and tempering &#8221;mode&#8221; was still going on in my head or subconscious.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\"> I invented this system in 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/8-Bending-and-Tempering.jpg\" width=\"616\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">Patents were gr<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">anted in Finland FI 115045 in 2005, EPO accepted them, China CN 100591634C in 2010.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">But never in USA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">It would have been an excellent competitor GLASSTECH external press bender.\u00a0I offered this to GLASTON in 2004, at the same time, when GLASTON tried to eliminate my \u201cbox construction\u201d patent.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt;\">With patent FI 88909 it would have challenged even GLASSTECH DBO 6 option.\u00a0<em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For\u00a0GLASTON HTBS is still the only bending and tempering machine, (instead of BTF, <a href=\"https:\/\/glaston.net\/releases\/?id=55D9E431486F20E8\">https:\/\/glaston.net\/releases\/?id=55D9E431486F20E8<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"heading\">\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>BTF got a chance in FINNTEMP as a &#8221;ShapeWizard&#8221; in 2007.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.feracitas.fi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/9-ShapeWizrd.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm; padding-left: 40px;\">BTF would still have a small market for special applications.\u00a0 FINNTEMP went bankrupt as 2 engineers wanted to make their own success story. Anything which was good in BTF and my <em>&#8221;product development plan&#8221;<\/em> was not accepted.
